Visiting Ruby Beach on the Pacific Coast

Ruby Beach is one of the most well-known beaches to visit along the Olympic coastline. Famous for the ruby colored crystals in the beach sand that occasionally gathers there, Ruby Beach, offers miles of beach exploration with huge rock formations, driftwood and tide pools. During low tide you can see starfish, crab, and other sea life among the sea stacks and tidal pools.

Be sure to take along a pair of shoes that can get wet. It will make exploring a lot more fun. Driftwood lines the shore and the beach is rocky, not sandy. Ruby beach is also a dog-friendly beach, so your furry friend is welcome too.

Getting to Ruby Beach

To get there from Forks, travel southbound on US 101 for 27 miles and turn right following signage for Ruby Beach just past mile marker 165. From Kalaloch or for northbound travelers, follow US 101 north and turn left following signage for Ruby Beach just past mile marker 164. The parking lot has space for a couple dozen cars with overflow parking along the road leading to the lot. There are two vault toilets available near the trailhead.

Let the Exploration Begin!

Beginning at the parking lot trailhead, follow the trail down to the beach for a quarter mile and climb over the driftwood to reach the beach. Near the bottom of the trail Cedar Creek empties into a large pool.  It’s a peaceful place to explore and play in the water. From the beach, choose which way you want to go! To the north you can walk about three miles past  large sea stacks and cliff faces all the way to the waters of the Hoh River. To the south, during low tide, hike about three miles to Steamboat Creek that enjoys views of Destruction Island and its lighthouse which are located 4 miles southwest off the beach.

After exploring the beach, return to the trail over the driftwood and walk a quarter-mile to the trailhead. For a magical ending to your day of exploring, find a cozy spot on the driftwood and watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.
